5 July 2025: Will there be a terrible tsunami in Japan.
These days a prediction in Japan has created fear in the hearts of people. This prediction is not an ordinary claim, but is by a famous manga artist Rio Tatsuki, who is known as “Japan’s Baba Venga“. His manga “The Future I Saw“, published in 2021, claims that on July 5, 2025, a natural disaster will occur in Japan, which will be three times more devastating than the 2011 Tohoku tsunami. This prediction has created a stir not only in Japan, but all of Asia. People are canceling their travel plans out of fear, and it is having a profound effect on the tourism industry.

Basis of prediction and credibility of Rio Tatsuki
Rio Tatsuki has written in his manga that on July 5, 2025, a huge crack will open in the sea floor between Japan and the Philippines, causing huge waves. The intensity of these waves will be much greater than the 2011 tsunami, which caused massive devastation in Japan and killed more than 18,000 people. Tatsuki’s predictions are being taken seriously because he has made many accurate claims in the past. For example, the 1995 Kobe earthquake, the 2011 Tohoku tsunami, and even the prediction of the COVID-19 pandemic were included in his manga, which later proved to be true. This is why his new warning has spread panic among the people.
Flood of earthquakes on Tokara Islands
This prediction gained further strength when a series of earthquakes occurred in the Tokara Islands located southwest of Japan in recent weeks. According to the Japan Meteorological Agency, more than 900 earthquakes have been recorded in this area from June 21 to July 3, 2025. Some of these tremors reached a magnitude of 5.5, and many tremors were so powerful that people saw items in homes shake and fall off shelves. Seismic activity has increased abnormally, especially on Akuseki Island, giving locals sleepless nights.
Nankai Trough: A ticking threat
Along with Tatsuki’s prediction, scientific discoveries are also raising concerns. “Slow-slip” earthquakes have recently been recorded in the Nankai Trough, a tectonic zone near the southern coast of Japan. These slow and deep tremors are not felt on the surface, but for scientists they can be an early warning of a major earthquake. A “megaquake” has occurred in the Nankai Trough every 100-200 years over the past 1,400 years, and the last major earthquake was recorded in 1946 with a magnitude of 8.1-8.4.
According to a recent report by Japan’s Earthquake Research Committee, there is an 82% chance of an earthquake of magnitude 7 or more occurring in the Nankai Trough in the next 30 years, up from an earlier estimate of 75%. If such an earthquake occurs, it could kill 2,98,000 people and cause economic losses of $2 trillion.
Scientists’ view and government response
Although Tatsuki’s prediction has created fear among people, scientists are completely rejecting it. Professor Robert Geller of Tokyo University says that it is impossible for current science to predict the exact date and time of an earthquake or tsunami. The Japan Meteorological Agency has also not issued any tsunami warning, but has said to keep an eye on seismic activities. Miyagi Prefecture Governor Yoshihiro Murai has termed it as an “unfounded rumor” and appealed to people to remain calm and not cancel travel plans.
The Japanese government has updated its disaster management plans in view of the earthquake dangers. This includes strong embankments in coastal areas, safe evacuation buildings, and regular disaster drills. Still, relief and rescue operations in remote areas like the Tokara Islands may take time, further increasing people’s concern.
Impact on tourism
The most immediate impact of this prediction has been on Japan’s tourism industry. According to a report by Bloomberg Intelligence, flights and hotel bookings to Japan for July 2025 have fallen by up to 83%. Flights from Hong Kong to Japan have been particularly sharply reduced. Many airlines, such as Hong Kong Airlines, have suspended flights to southern Japanese cities such as Kagoshima and Kumamoto for July and August. Hashtags such as July5Disaster are trending on social media, deepening the atmosphere of fear.
What do people say
There is an atmosphere of fear among the residents of the Tokara Islands. Local resident Isamu Sakamoto (60) said that after the continuous earthquakes, it seems as if the ground is shaking all the time. People are staying up all night, and many have cancelled their travel plans. The prediction is also being discussed on social media, with some considering it a superstition, while others are taking it seriously.
What will happen on July 5
Will Ryo Tatsuki’s prediction come true, or is it just a coincidence that the number of earthquakes on the Tokara Islands is increasing? Scientists believe that Japan, which is located on the “Ring of Fire“, is always at risk of earthquakes and tsunamis. But predicting the exact date of a disaster is still beyond the scope of science. Nevertheless, Tatsuki’s previously accurate predictions have raised a question in people’s minds—will Japan really face a great disaster on July 5, 2025?
For now, the Japanese government and scientists are cautious, and people are being advised not to pay heed to rumors. But the frequent earthquakes on the Tokara Islands and the increasing tectonic activity in the Nankai Trench are making this prediction more mysterious. Only time will tell whether this prediction comes true or not. Until then, caution and preparation are the biggest weapons.
