PM Modi’s ‘Mann Ki Baat’: “Emergency crushed the Constitution, an attempt was also made to bow down the judiciary”
Prime Minister Narendra Modi, while addressing the countrymen in his popular monthly radio program ‘Mann Ki Baat’ on Sunday, recalled the Emergency imposed in 1975 and called it a black chapter for democracy. He said that the decision taken on the night of June 25, 1975, not only hurt the Constitution of India, but an attempt was also made to put pressure on the judiciary of the country.
Prime Minister Narendra Modi made a sharp comment recalling the period of Emergency in his monthly radio program ‘Mann Ki Baat‘. He said that the Emergency imposed in 1975 not only tried to weaken the Constitution, but also tried to hold the judiciary hostage. In his address, he discussed this difficult period and included audio excerpts of former Prime Ministers Morarji Desai and Atal Bihari Vajpayee, as well as former Deputy Prime Minister Jagjivan Ram, which reflect the hardships of the 21-month Emergency from 1975 to 1977.
Modi said, “Limits of atrocities were crossed on the people during that period. These are painful stories which are impossible to forget.” His government observed ‘Samvidhan Hatya Diwas’ on June 25, the 50th anniversary of the Emergency. In 1975, the then Congress government led by Indira Gandhi imposed Emergency under Article 352 of the Constitution citing ‘internal disturbance‘. This was the first and only instance of the use of this provision in independent India.
“Conspiracy to kill the Constitution and enslave the judiciary”
Prime Minister Modi said in clear words, “Those who imposed the Emergency not only killed the Constitution, but also tried to make the judiciary their slave. People were forcibly put in jails, they were tortured mentally and physically.”
He further said that there are many such examples, which cannot be erased from history. This was the time when there was a direct attack on democracy and an attempt was made to crush the freedom of the countrymen.
25 June was celebrated as ‘Samvidhan Hatya Diwas’
The Modi government celebrated 25 June as ‘Samvidhan Hatya Diwas’ on the occasion of completion of 50 years of Emergency. He said, “On that day we remembered those who fearlessly opposed the Emergency, endured jails, but did not bow down. It is the power of the people of India that they protected democracy.”
In his address, the Prime Minister also shared the voices of the then opposition leaders during the Emergency – Morarji Desai, Atal Bihari Vajpayee and Jagjivan Ram through audio clips. These clips expose the truth of that period, when attempts were made to suppress democratic voices.
“The people of India never bowed down”
Modi said on this historic event, “In those 21 months, attempts were made to crush the soul of India, but the soul of India remained firm. People never compromised on the values of democracy. Ultimately truth won and the Emergency ended.”
He said that we should learn a lesson from this period and remain vigilant so that no one can ever try to harm the democratic system again.
India’s growing achievements in health and social security
Prime Minister Modi also focused on the country’s health services and social security in his address. He said that two prestigious global organizations – the World Health Organization (WHO) and the International Labor Organization (ILO) – have recently praised India’s progress in these areas.
ILO report: 64% of the population gets social security
Modi said that today about 64% of India’s population is connected with social security schemes in some form or the other, whereas till the year 2015 this number was only 25 crores. “Now, about 95 crore people are availing benefits of government social security schemes. This is a major achievement and is taking India towards saturation coverage,” he said.
Pledge to eradicate trachoma
The Prime Minister also lauded India’s efforts to eradicate a serious eye disease called ‘trachoma’. The disease can lead to blindness if not treated on time.
He proudly noted that the WHO has declared India as a trachoma-free country. He said campaigns like Swachh Bharat Mission and Jal Jeevan Mission have played a key role in its eradication. “Today, when every household has access to clean tap water, the risk of such diseases has reduced significantly,” he added.
Axiom-4 mission and India’s achievements in space
In his speech, Prime Minister Modi also mentioned his interaction with Group Captain Shubhanshu Shukla of the Indian Air Force, who is currently on the International Space Station (ISS) as part of Axiom Space’s commercial mission Axiom-4.
Modi said, “Shubhanshu Shukla will be on the space station for a few more days. We will talk about this historic mission in more detail in the next episode of Mann Ki Baat.”
This mission reflects India’s rapidly growing space capabilities and is an inspiration for the young generation, who want to make their career in science and technology.
Wishes to spiritual yatras too
Modi also mentioned the religious and spiritual yatras going on in different parts of the country and wished the devotees. He specifically named the Kailash Mansarovar Yatra and said, “I wish good luck to all those who have set out on this holy journey. I also appreciate all the seva bhavis who are engaged in ensuring the convenience and safety of the pilgrims.
This Mann Ki Baat episode of Prime Minister Modi was not only a reminder of the events of the past, but also depicted the country’s current achievements and future prospects. From the Emergency imposed in 1975 to the Space Mission of 2025 – India has come a long way.
This program also teaches us that the public must always remain vigilant to protect the Constitution, judiciary and democracy. At the same time, it is also important that we understand and respect the progress made in the fields of our health, social security and science and move fearlessly towards the future.
