NCERT’s new module: Congress, Jinnah, and Mountbatten held responsible for partition
Just a day before Independence Day, NCERT has released a new special module, in which Congress, Mohammad Ali Jinnah, and Lord Mountbatten – all three have been blamed for the partition of India. This new edition has created a stir in politics, and many opposition parties, including Congress, have opposed it.
What is written in the module?
In the chapter “Guilty of Partition” of this module, it is clearly stated that the tragedy of the partition of India happened due to three main reasons –
1. Jinnah, who demanded a separate country.
2. Congress, which accepted the plan of partition.
3. Lord Mountbatten, who formally implemented this plan.
Along with this, it is also written in the module that the Indian leaders of that era did not have any special experience in handling administration, army, police or provinces. Due to this, they could not anticipate the problems that would come ahead and took decisions in haste.
Special comment on Congress
The module criticizes the Congress by writing that it not only underestimated Jinnah’s power, but also did not correctly estimate the far-reaching consequences of partition. This was the reason that after accepting the partition plan, the country had to pay a heavy price.
Mention of Kashmir and terrorism
It says that the partition not only destroyed the economy of Punjab and Bengal, but also weakened Jammu and Kashmir socially and economically. Later, these conditions became the cause of terrorism. Pakistan waged three wars to capture Kashmir and resorted to terrorism when it failed.
Nature of the module
NCERT has clarified that this module is not a part of the regular syllabus. It is a supplementary material that is taught to students through debates, posters, or discussions. Recently, Operation Sindoor was also included in a similar special module.
Prime Minister Modi’s speech also included
The words of Prime Minister Narendra Modi are also given in the introduction of this module. PM Modi had said:
“The pain of India’s partition can never be forgotten. Lakhs of sisters and brothers were displaced, and countless people were killed in the violence of hatred. In their memory, the country celebrates 14 August as Partition Horror Memorial Day.”
Political controversy
Congress leader Pawan Khera termed this module as completely wrong and even said that “such books should be burnt.” He says that distorting history will not change the truth. At the same time, Sandeep Dixit alleged that NCERT is under pressure from the BJP and challenged it to make it an issue of public debate.
On the other hand, BJP leader Shahnawaz Hussain put Congress in the dock and said that “If the Congress leadership had fought strongly at that time, India would never have been divided.”
Controversies have happened before
This is not the first time that NCERT has been surrounded by controversies. Even before this, there has been a big political controversy over the removal of chapters on Mughal rulers from textbooks and several changes.
In short, this new module of NCERT presents a new interpretation of history. In this, along with Jinnah and Mountbatten, Congress has also been held responsible for the partition. This is the reason why this subject has become a big issue of not only educational but also political debate.
