India-China Border Talks 2025: A New Step Towards Stability in Relations

India and China, the two largest and most influential neighbours in Asia, have been facing tensions and ups and downs due to border disputes for decades. But the 24th round of Special Representative-level talks held recently in Delhi has raised a new hope. The meeting was attended by National Security Advisor Ajit Doval from India’s side and Foreign Minister Wang Yi from China’s side.

After the meeting, China said that its relations with India are now moving on the “path of stable development” and the situation on the border has become “better and calmer” than before.

The Chinese Foreign Ministry mentioned in its statement that the consensus reached in the meeting between President Xi Jinping and Prime Minister Narendra Modi in Kazan is giving a new direction to the relations between the two countries. The ministry said that both India and China are big neighbors as well as developing countries, and hence there are extensive common interests and similar values between them.

Doval’s statement – Peace on the border strengthens relations

NSA Ajit Doval also reiterated during the talks that India-China relations have moved in a positive direction in the last nine months. According to him, the situation on the Line of Actual Control (LAC) remains calm, and mutual understanding has strengthened the relations between the two countries.

He also informed that Prime Minister Modi is going to participate in the Shanghai Cooperation Organization (SCO) summit to be held in Tianjin city of China on 31 August and 1 September. According to Doval, this is why the importance of this time’s talks increases even more.

Jaishankar and Wang Yi meet separately.

Meanwhile, External Affairs Minister Dr. S. Jaishankar also held bilateral talks with Wang Yi in Delhi. During this, Jaishankar clearly said that India and China will have to adopt clear and positive thinking to take their mutual relations forward.

He emphasized that in this direction, three things – mutual respect, mutual sensitivity, and mutual interest – should be made the basis. According to Jaishankar, there can be differences between the two countries, but they should not be allowed to take the form of a dispute or conflict.

A brief history of the India-China border dispute

India and China share a border of about 3,488 kilometers, called the Line of Actual Control (LAC). Patrol clashes and disputes have often come to the fore on this border.

1962 War: The biggest example of a border dispute is the Indo-China War of 1962, in which the relations between the two countries deteriorated badly.

Galwan clash (2020): The most serious incident in recent years was the Galwan Valley clash, in which soldiers of both countries were casualties.

After this, the two countries held several rounds of talks and gradually tried to normalize the situation.

Conclusion

Overall, the 24th round of talks between India and China gave the message that both countries are willing to give new strength to the relationship. China’s statement that “the situation on the border is stable and improving” and the statements of Doval and Jaishankar from India indicate that at present, both neighboring countries want to stay away from conflict and follow the path of cooperation and balance.

The biggest message of the India-China talks held in Delhi is that both countries are keen to improve relations. China’s statement that the “situation at the border is stable and improving” and India’s claim that the “relations are on the path of progress” indicate that the two big neighbours now want to prioritise cooperation over tension.

The upcoming visit of PM Modi to China and the SCO summit will determine whether these positive signals can be translated into real results.
